Section 1.0

Welcome & Your Junior Committee

Got a question or a worry? Start with your Convenor — that's exactly what they're there for.

The Junior section is run by the Junior Committee, appointed by the Men's & Ladies Clubs (affiliated to Golf Ireland). Any issue you raise goes first to the Junior Committee, and if needed, on to the club committees — always in confidence.

Who does what

Convenors organise junior activities and represent junior members on the club committees.
PGA Professional delivers coaching sessions.
Volunteers (often parents!) help run coaching at the range and on the course.
DLP & Children's Officer is your go-to for any concern — see the Child Protection card.
Junior Captains — CLGC hopes to nominate its first Boys & Girls Junior Captains in 2027.

Section 2.0

Child Protection & Safeguarding

The club follows Golf Ireland's Safeguarding Policy, and there's always a named adult you can talk to.

The full Safeguarding Policy is available on request from Club Management, the Junior Committee, or the club website.

The club cannot supervise casual (non-competition) golf. Junior golfers — especially under 13 — should not play alone, and should not be dropped off or left unaccompanied at the club.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to accompany their child while playing casual golf (it doesn't need to be in a golfing capacity), especially while they're beginners, and to be familiar with course etiquette and safety themselves.

Section 3.0

Getting Your Handicap

New to the club? You'll start with no handicap — that's normal, and it's not just about your score.

Once the Junior Committee is happy with your standard — ability, etiquette, and attitude on and off the course — they'll recommend you for a World Handicapping System (WHS) Handicap Index.

To qualify, play 54 holes at County Longford (any mix of 9- and 18-hole rounds), off the correct tees, with your card marked by an adult or fellow competitor.

No handicap yet? Play off the green tee-boxes, or the 100m/150m markers.
Boys with a handicap: yellow or white markers (white only in competition).
Girls with a handicap: red tee-boxes.
Write your name on the card and get it signed by you and your marker.
Mark the top of the card "FOR HANDICAP PURPOSES ONLY" and drop completed cards in the scorecard box in the lobby.

Section 4.0

Safety on the Golf Course

Watch your swing, watch the ball, and always shout “FORE!”

Before a practice swing or a shot, make sure no one's close enough to be hit.
Wait until golfers ahead and course staff are well out of range. Shout "FORE" if your ball could land near anyone.
Always stand behind whoever is hitting.
The lakes are a big, deep feature of the course — stay clear, and never go in after a ball.
Wash your hands after golf (course chemicals and animal droppings).
Under 13s should never be on the course unaccompanied — parents/guardians are especially encouraged to go round with their 8–13 year old, even if it's just to walk along.
All junior members must attend a club induction (dates advised by the Junior Convenor) — this is where your signed Code of Conduct is collected, and course access isn't granted until it's complete.
Junior members may not sign in guests or visitors who are under 18.

Section 5.0

Playing Golf

Book ahead, keep moving, and let faster players through.

Children under 8 aren't on the course solo (organised junior scrambles aside); ages 8–13 always need a responsible adult or older sibling with them.

Only juniors with a handicap can play the course outside of junior competitions or handicap-purpose rounds, and every round — casual or competitive — must be booked on Clubnet in advance.

Unless entered in a competition or instructed otherwise, juniors must not take a timesheet slot before 1:00pm on Saturday or 1:00pm on Sunday. Under-18s play in a maximum of three balls, unless instructed by the Junior/Competitions Committee or with an adult (18+).

“Play the ball as it lies. Play the course as you find it.

And if you can't do either, do what is fair —

and to do what is fair, you need to know the rules of Golf.”

Section 5.6

Care of the Golf Course

Leave every green, fairway and bunker better than you found it.

Repair pitch marks On every green — yours and others too. Left alone, one takes 2 weeks to heal.

Replace divots An unreplaced divot needs sanding and seeding by course staff.

Rake bunkers Leave every bunker as you'd wish to find it.

Section 6.2

Course Etiquette

Good etiquette is what makes you welcome in any group — on this course or any other.

Never throw clubs, and keep noise down for other golfers — phones on silent.
Never cut in on a hole ahead of players already on it.
Stand still and stay quiet near a tee-box, green or fairway in play.
Bring your own bag — max 14 clubs in competition — plus tees, markers and a pitch-mark repairer. Use the bins.
Keep bags/trolleys off greens, out of bunkers and off tee boxes.
Give way to greenkeeping staff and avoid restricted areas.
Shout "FORE" for a ball heading near anyone — and apologise if it was yours.
Never cast a shadow over someone's shot, and never walk through a putting line.
Leave the green promptly; mark scores at the next tee, not on the green.
Mark your playing partner's card, never your own, in competition — and always be honest.
Keep up with the group ahead, and let faster groups play through.

Sections 6.3 & 6.4

Dress Code & Clubhouse

Smart, safe, and spikes clean at the door.

Golf footwear with soft spikes only, for your own safety.
Smart casual clothing on the course — no beach shorts or football shorts/togs.
No dirty or grass-covered shoes in the Bar/Restaurant — staff or committee may ask you to leave if in breach.
Under 13s in the bar should be with an adult/older sibling, and vacate by 9:00pm.
Locker Rooms are for changing only. Waiting on a lift after coaching? Wait just inside the main entrance.

Section 7.0

Code of Conduct for Parents/Guardians

Your support makes the Junior programme run — and how you show up matters as much as how they play.

Parents/guardians are asked to help with supervising coaching and competitions, transport to away events, teaching scorecard-marking and the rules, and simply being a good role model. As a parent/guardian of a young player, please:

Always behave responsibly, and never seek to unfairly affect a player or the outcome of a game.
Never embarrass or disparage a young participant with flippant or sarcastic remarks.
Respect officials, coaches, convenors, referees and other players — never publicly question their judgement or honesty.
Attend events and coaching if you like, but don't interfere with the coach or professional while they're working with a player.
Teach your child that honest effort matters as much as winning, and applaud good play on both sides.
Respect the rules and procedures of County Longford Golf Club and Golf Ireland, and never use threatening or abusive language.

Breaches of this code are dealt with directly by the Junior Convenor(s).

Section 8.0

Photos & Social Media

Smile — you might end up on the club's socials!

Photos and videos may be taken at golf events and used to promote the sport, including on social media. All such media is reviewed by the Junior Convenor/Committee before it's shared.

Please don't post, share or tag photos or videos of other junior members on your own social media without their parent/guardian's permission first. If you have any concern about a photo taken at the club, or about something posted online, contact the Junior Convenor or the Club Children's Officer (see the Child Protection card) — it will be handled directly and in confidence.

Signing Up? Every Junior Member Signs This.

Before course access is granted, both junior member and parent/guardian must go through, agree to, and sign the full Junior Member Code of Conduct. This happens at the club's Junior Induction:

Every new junior member attends an induction, organised by the club — dates advised by the Junior Convenor.

Signed Code of Conduct forms are collected at induction; course access is only granted once it's complete.
